Graphing our Weather
CliTemperature is an excellent example of a measurable attribute. When we, as mathematicians, look at a collection of measurements, or data, we can often learn a great deal. Today you will be creating line graphs on Excel. The data that you will be using for these graphs are the daily high and low temperatures in Southbury during the month in which you were born. After we create these graphs, we'll be answering some questions about the information we gathered.
To find this historical information, you will need to visit the following website:

Kahn Academy
Today you will be using Kahn Academy. Some of you have heard of this site and may even use it. Others of you are hearing about it for the first time.
Kahn Academy is a great math website. I like to use it in class, and as we get into harder and harder materials I will recommend videos for you to watch at home.
To introduce you to Kahn Academy, you will be taking the lessons on improper fractions and mixed numbers. I will guide you through the first lesson, and then you'll go off on your own.

Canadian Winters
As surprising as it may seem, fresh snow is a very effective form of insulation. The reason is that snow is 95% air, which means that snowflakes play a role very similar to that of fiberglass or polystyrene. To get an idea of how effectively snow insulates, all you need to do is compare the air temperature just above a layer of snow about 16 in. thick and the temperature of the ground underlying this layer. During the night, when the air temperature is -22 degrees F or less, the ground is only 20 degrees F. Without this natural protective layer, the ground would be completely frozen, many plant species would not survive, and smaller forms of wildlife – small mammals such as mice, squirrels and rabbits – would not exist. Although hibernating insects take refuge under the snow, larger animals also find similar protection by digging tunnels into larger snowdrifts. People also benefit from a layer of snow on their housetops, which acts as insulation by reducing heat loss through the roof.

Catch the Breeze
Wind can help fly a kite, power a sailboat or spread seeds. Around the world, wind has also become an increasingly popular and inexpensive source of energy that is converted1 into electricity.
At the National Wind Technology Center in Colorado, scientists are working to advance wind-power technology. Wind is often considered an environmentally friendly source of power. Wind doesn't pollute the environment and is a renewable source of energy that can't be used up like fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas.
Harnessing2 power from wind is nothing new. Some of the first windmills were used in Europe more than 5,000 years ago. Today, modern windmills, called turbines, resemble airplane propellers and are grouped together in wind farms.
Despite the benefits, wind power is far from perfect. Opponents of wind farms say the biggest problem is unreliability—when the wind doesn't blow, there is no power. They also argue that wind turbines can be an eyesore and threaten birds and other wildlife that fly into the blades.
Currently, 27 states have wind farms. Those turbines provide enough power for more than a million homes.

Sturbridge Village Field Trip
Here are a few reminders for Friday's trip!
- Arrive no later than 7:45 AM for an 8:00 AM departure
- Make sure that all students bring an AM snack, and PM snack and a lunch. Please avoid packing anything with nuts. We have several students who are allergic and items containing nuts will not be allowed. Also, we ask that snacks and lunches are completely disposable. In other words, please ensure that everything in the lunches and snacks you pack can be recycled or thrown away. We ask that no one brings anything in glass bottles.
- Students are allowed to bring electronic devices (cameras, iPods, etc.) for the sole purpose of taking pictures. These devices are the responsibility of the student and will not be held by a teacher or chaperone. Also, these devices may not be used on the bus to or from Sturbridge Village. If a device is being used inappropriately at Sturbridge Village (games, texting, social networking, etc.), or if a device is in use on the bus, it will be confiscated for the remainder of the trip.
- There are gift shops at Sturbridge VIllage. If you choose to send money with your student, it is their responsibility to carry it for the duration of the trip. Again, teachers and chaperones will not be responsible for students' money.
- We plan to return to GES at 4:30 PM. If, due to traffic or other unforeseen circumstances, we will be more than 30 minutes late, we will inform the school who will in turn inform you.
- If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected]
Thanks!
