Fireside Chat – May 30, 2014
It has been a very busy unusual week here in Room D2. Between Memorial Day, an unexpected closing and a field trip, we had a wild ride. Despite all of that, we still had a good week. Here’s an update:
- In Reading Workshop we are continuing to discuss and explore the Hero’s Journey. This week we discussed the fact that heroes often times have a mentor who assists them on their journeys, they often have to cross a threshold, and that they face challenges before their ultimate conflict.
- In Writing Workshop we are knee-deep into our fantasy stories. In conjunction with Reading Workshop, we are working to incorporate the Hero’s Journey into our writing. Ask your student about the story he or she is writing.
- In Math we continuing to work on our operations unit. This week we reviewed the four arithmetic functions to prepare for our final math fluency assessments of the school year. The class did well!
- In Social Studies we are discussing the differences between local, state and the federal government in preparation for our trip to the Old State House. The trip was excellent and helped solidify your student’s understanding of how governments function.
A few reminders: We have school on Monday! We will operate on the emergency closing schedule, which means students are dismissed at 12:05. Permission slips for Mystic have been passed out; please return them by next Friday, June 7th. Have a great weekend.
